W3 Total Cache is a WordPress plugin, that will improve your website load and make it much faster and give your visitors a greater user experience. I have personally tested it on this site and others to measure the difference in loading speed.
And it makes a huge difference in the loading speed if it is installed or not. But it has to be configured correctly and that is what I will show you in this article, so if you want to find out the optimal configuration of the W3 Total Cache Plugin then follow on.
I will do the set up in a step by step fashion so that it will be easy to understand and follow the guidelines, here we go !

W3 Total Cache Plugin Installation

The plugin is installed through the WordPress dashboard, click to add a new plugin to the main menu at your left side, enter W3 Total Cache in the search bar, and when it pops up, click install and then click activate it. When activated you will see it in the main menu on the left side. It is named Performance, when you hover over Performance you’ll get a new menu, with the different settings, that is what we are going to use.

  • General = As it is.
  • Page Cache = Enable.
  • Page Cache Method = Disk Enhance.
  • Minify = Enable.
  • Minify Mode = Manual.
  • Minify Cache Method = Disk.
  • HTML Minifyer = Default.
  • JS Minifyer = Default.
  • CSS Minify = Default or CSS Tidy ( I left it at Default) If you experience any compatibility problem with your theme or other plugins, you can leave it disabled( It has minimal impact on the speed)
  • Database Cache = Enable.
  • Database Cache Method = Disk.
  • Object Cache = Enable.
  • Object Cache Method = Disk.
  • Browser Cache = Enable.
  • CDN = If you are using CDN = Enable, if not forget it.
  • Enable Varnish Cache Purging = Disable.

 

W3 Total Cache Page Cache Settings

  • Cache Front Page = Enable.
  • Cache Feeds: Site, categories, tags, comments = Enable.
  • Cache SSL (https) it is not in use so = Disable.
  • Cache URI’s with query string variables = Disable.
  • Cache 404’s pages = Enable.
  • Cache requests only for www.wpcub.com site address = Enable.
  • Don’t cache pages for logged in users = Enabled.
  • Don’t cache pages for following user roles = It’s up to you, what your preferences are.

 

Cache Preload :

  • Automatically prime the page cache = Enable.
  • Update Interval = 18000.
  • Pages per Interval = 10.
  • Sitemap Url = Add your sitemap URL like this, this is mine (http://www.insidemarketingwebsite.com/sitemap.xml)

 

Purge Cache : Page Cache

  • Leave as it is, no change is required.

 

Advanced :

  • Leave as it is, no change is required.

General Settings :

  • Rewrite URL structure = Enable.
  • Disable minify for logged in users = Disable.
  • Minify error notification = Is up to you.

HTML and XML :

  • HTML minify settings = Enable this one and all the sub options below.
  • Ignored comment stems = Leave as it is.

JS :

  • JS Minify settings = Enable.
  • Operation in Area = Minify and Non – Blocking using async.

CSS :

  • CSS minify Settings = Enable.
  • Combine only = Disable.
  • Preserved comment removal = Disable.
  • Line Break removal = Enable.
  • Import handling = Process.

Advanced :

  • Leave as it is, no change is required.

  • Don’t cache queries for logged in users = Enable.

 

Advanced :

General Settings :

  • Set expires header = Enable.

  • Set W3 Total Cache header = Enable.
  • Enable HTTP (gzip) compression = Enable.
  • Prevent caching of objects after settings change = Enable.
  • Don’t set cookies for static files = Enable.
  • Do not process 404 errors for static objects with WordPress = Disable.

CSS and JS :

  • Set expires header = Enable.
  • Expires header lifetime = 31536000
  • Set cache control header = Enable.
  • Cache control policy = Cache with max age.
  • Set entity tag (eTag) = Enable.
  • Set W3 Total Cache header = Enable.
  • Enable HTTP (gzip) compression = Enable.
  • Prevent caching of objects after settings change = Disable.
  • Remove cookies for static files = Enable.

HTML and XML :

  • Set expires header = Enable.
  • Expires header lifetime = 3600 seconds.
  • Set cache control header = Enable.
  • Cache control policy = Cache with max-age.
  • Set entity tag (eTag) = Enable.
  • Set W3 Total Cache header = Enable.
  • Enable HTTP (gzip) compression = Enable.

Media and Other Files :

  • Set expires header = Enable.
  • Expires header lifetime = 31536000 seconds.
  • Set cache control = Enable.
  • Cache control policy = cache with max-age.
  • Set the entity tag(eTag) = Enable.
  • Set W3 Total Cache header = Enable.
  • Enable HTTP(gzip) compression = Enable.
  • Prevent caching of objects after settings change = Enable.
  • Disable cookies for static files = Enable.
Congratulations, you are done with the configuration of W3 Total Cache Plugin and you have now the best settings for the plugin.
The speed of your website should now be hugely improved, check with the measurement you took before you installed the W3 Total Cache plugin and configured it.

Be notified :When you make a change to something in your WordPress blog, the W3 Total Cache Plugin will ask you to “empty all caches” click on that button and the plugin will delete the previous cache and generate a new one and your changes will be valid.
